Welcome to the Millennium
SnowCastle in Kemi!
Kemi in northern Finland lies 140 kilome-ters up from Luleå in
Sweden. In 2 000 the town will build its fifth snowcastle which opens its gates at the
beginning of February. The Millennium SnowCastle welcomes all participants of the Winter
Cities Conference in Lulea (and Kiruna) to celebrate the New Year Thousand in Kemi. The
Millennium SnowCastle is a new and different attraction - an exciting Italian-style
architectual creation in snow on the plains of the Gulf of Bothnia. And how to get to Kemi
and to the Millennium SnowCastle? From Lulea it takes approximately two hours to drive to
Kemi. You will also easily get to Kemi by bus. For more information, please call +358(0)

Ice and fireThe Luleå ARcTic Festival is being arranged for the sixth time at
Gültzau-udden in central Luleå. A winter festival at a high artistic level and at the
same time a folk festival.
Fire and ice are the theme at the
Lulaå ARcTic Festival 8-14 February 2000, in conjunction with Winter Cities 2000. A world
Championship in Ice Sulpture and a symposium in European fire sculpture are two exciting
events which promise unforgettable experiences.
The world championship in Ice sculpture has
only been arranged on one previous occasion, in Alaska. Now it´s Luleå´s turn, where 40
of the world´s most eminent ice sculptors from all corners of the globe will be competing
in ice clear as glass, all taken directly from Luleå Bay.
The European Symposium in Fire Sculpture is
being held for the second time. For two days European artists will be presenting their
inflammable sculptures, and on the last day they will let the flames take on exciting
shapes against the snow and the dark winter sky.
Other events at the Luleå ARcTic
Festival:
A new creative Multi-Art Show with dancing,
music and ice stage setting. Ice and snow construction, the result of a research project
involving architects, ice research workers and artists.

snow.

Quattro StagioniWinter City - One town
One town - One season
One season - Four artists
Four artists - Four seasons
Four seasons - Quattro Stagioni
How does an artist portray a season in a
room - winter for example?
Four artists/groups of artists from the
Nor-dic countries will each have a room in the House of Art [Konstens Hus] to
portray winter artistically in their own way. The invited artists all live in countries
which have a real winter climate, i.e. they all have a personal relationship with and
experience of real winter. The Icelander surrounded by the sea, the Norwegian crammed in
between the gulf stream and the mountains, the Finn in a country be-tween Sweden, Norway
and the infinite expanses of Russia, and the Swede in his long, long country where the
difference in temperature between north and south can be as much as 30 - 40 degrees
Celsius. All of them with different backgrounds and points of departure.
The visitor moves between the various
"rooms" at the House of Art, where the seasons change: he leaves one winter and
steps at once into another. Perhaps he wont be quite sure whether hes inside
or out!
